ADRIFT

The best modern longboard movie ever made, hands down. Made by J. Brother in the early 90's. First I saw Endless Summer II and pooped my pants. I quickly became a fan of Longboarding via Wingnut. Then I saw Adrift. Joel took over from that point on. This film gives an overview of Longboarding in the 90's. I think there are five Joel Segments. Great music and quite artistic for it's time. The dude who made it is from the LBC so that makes it even more legit. This is part of the opening scene. Joel murdering some small reformers. Highly recomended.

Joel Tudor Pivot Fin

TJ had this in an old Bruce Jones squaretail Noserider. I think it is 9'4". This fin was lost for many years. Evan's mom just found it at the bottom of a laundry basket.

Pretty cool that it has the Takayama logo and Joel Tudor on it. That was an immensely influential era in John and I's surfing. Pretty much the only longboarder worth watching at the time along with Kevin Connolly, Josh Farberow, Tom Wegner, Jimmy Gamboa, Tyler Hatzikian, etc.

We were in 9th grade and we would get John's mom to drive us down to Oceanside so we could go in Takayama's shop and drool over Model T's.

TJ's dad had a 9'6" triple stringer Joel Tudor Flow Model by Takayama. It was a pintail. I wonder if he still has it. I wonder if he still has that garage full of boards and drawers full of fins...

Kookbox Twin Pin

I got to ride this thing about two weeks ago in waist high mushburgers. At 5'10" x pretty thick x trashcan lid nose x hard edged pin, the thing flies!

My buddy Dana was able to borrow it for a bit and was kind enough to let me take it for a spin. I really liked the hold yet controlled drift through the turns and the speed down the line. It floated me a ton and paddled like a much bigger board.

If I had to describe it like a haircut, it would be the mullet. Voluptuous and floaty up front with some party in the back. The pin was unique in that it almost felt like a stabilizer fin for some in the pocket carves.

The fins were cool too. Not your run of the mill keels. A bit more swept back with a lot less surface area. Kept it loose without sacrificing too much drive.

Jury Duty

Sitting at the court house right now in lovely Santa Ana. Wasting my life away on the interwebs.

I paid $6 for a shitty wireless web connection. Shitty informational video playing right now. I'm pissed I forgot my master blasters to drown out all the garbage spewing over to speakers. The dude next to me has a 1986 Dell Inspiron laptop that sounds like it is getting ready to take off.

I found this on the erBB. I want to know what board he is riding. Photo: Hootski - Hawaiian staff photographer for the erBB.

Hopefully I get chosen for a trial so I can do this.

"I am above the law!" Judge Dredd style.

Vans Icons

I scored these posters last week. Psyched.

They are from the new Vans Icons campaign, I saw them pasted up in Hollywood 2 weeks ago among others.

Kookbox Has Landed

Joel Tudor's new board company, Kookbox, has just launched their new website.

I can't wait to see people's reactions about how this stuff doesn't work, looks weird, is lame, will never outperform a thruster, etc.

This shit wasn't made for you. Much like Arrogant Bastard wasn't made for the average beer queer. You like it or you don't. Do me a favor, and read the label of an Arrogant Bastard...it's the truth.

Sell out for Surftech? Whatver. Burned you at Swami's, deal with it.

I know all of the designer hippies at Mollusk, Thalia, and Shelter will be creamin' their jeans for some of these sleds.

The trailer for Shorter looks bitchin' too.

Joel Tudor x Loomstate

Since I was a grom, Joel was always my favorite surfer. I felt like no one else's longboarding was any good in comparison to his. (I pretty much still feel that way, with the exception of the young crop of so cal dudes.) Yeah, dudes were doing gnarly shit like airs, huge gnar shacks, crazy kick fives, heels, and stuff...but it all looked whack to me. Joel had a certain flow and minimalism in the water.

Joel at Pipe? Fuck off. So tight.

Joel at Puerto Escondido in Siestas and Olas? Fuck off again. Cheater 5 in the death pit to boosting a little mini air on the inside on a 9'10" single fin. Yeah bro. Dig it.

Douche McGregor and I used to copy all of the Joel Tudor sections out of every longboard movie we could get our hands on. We ended up with a 6 hour Joel Tudor reel. It was like watching the highlights of every movie, without any of the crappy stuff.

My walls were covered in every picture and poster I could cut out of surf mags.

I have a stack of every Longboard Magazine issue I could get my hands on that has an interview or cover shot of him.

We would drive down to Donald Takayama's shop and drool over Flow Models...and by "drive down" I mean get our moms to drive us for the day. We would cruise down to Cardiff, Swamis, Malibu, Windansea, and all the places we would see him shred in the movies.

We actually got to ride our friend's dad's 10' Flow Model at Bolsa one day.

When Tudor surfboards started up, we about shit ourselves. Douchemcgregor got a 9'4 Diamond Tail Noserider, so did MasaTom. MasaTom also had a Good Karma model (that flew off the roof of his rig on the way home from shredding one night.) Then Douchemcgregor got another one of his single fins. We both have a few Tudor fins.

Fuck, this weird! Borderline stalker, I know.

Anyways, I thought I'd share some Joel Tudor x Loomstate radness I found on the interweb @ Harmony Amplifier.

Here is a clip from J. Brothers Longer. Get into it.

Full Disclosure

I apologize in advance. I have hid this for far too long, I can no longer go on with this charade...

I received a Surftech as a gift about 2 months ago. I know. Crucify me.

Anyways, it is a 6'9" Joel Tudor Diamond Tail Egg...And you know what...I really like the thing. So far I have ridden it in everything from 2 foot slop to overhead racetracks.

The thing floats and paddles as good as my 9'0" Daddy O from EC. It glides and turns super well too. It is much more responsive than its chunky outline and rails make it appear to be.

A big hangup for me is that I always wonder if the PU version works better. I am assuming it does. Hopefully I will be able to try one out one day.

Anyways, I have 12 boards in my quiver right now, and this is the only one that is a popout. But hey, Joel has a kid now and college is damn expensive(damn you student loans!!!) So I can understand going for the Surftech deal.

Anyways, her she is.
